Lyrics

Time Has Nothing To Do With It

In Bleeding Kansas (part 1)

i back down
more often these days
but no more
than you
and while i
may have lost it
i haven't forgot
i haven't forgot

and i never will
no, i never will
keep running still
keep running still

My Black Dog

come some soft midnight creeping
the sight of your rowboat sinking
that's not the weight i'd have you hold

the animal infant enters
weighed down by funeral matters
his once bright body now turning cold

your blue gaze shifts a second
impossible not pretending
that all we sold off is coming home

this season spent in mirrors
the daylight disappears as
we stare at hours that move too slow

Thicket of Thieves

i believe in what you know
even though i've heard you speak
your words fall out like clumps of grass
orphaned in a midnight clearing

this once was a place of peace
before the war had turned our backs
chasing through a thicket of thieves
two wet eyes, a muffled screech

come on over and stay
as long as hunger holds
it's not the place we made
but it's ours until we go

every day i shape this house
tearing up floorboards and stone
four strong winds blow my open door
letting in the rain and snow

maybe makes the night still shake
bending back the light of fall
my black dog he leads the chase
the barroom lights flicker on and off

Love is War

i heard your back crack break
that's not the sound you make
it sounded awfully wrong
one man can't be so strong

love is war

we move in fits and starts
it's somewhere near the part
where it all goes to hell
where right is wrong and might is well

love is war

i can no longer
clean up after
the mess she makes here

hips flicked in a lovers dance
she wore the only glance
delivered across the room
shot once from her to you

love is war

you are the perfect war
the one thing worth dying for
tracked down by animals
we solider on and on

Yours is a Small, Still Voice

oh - is there some place for us to go
somewhere that we could be alone
where no one else will ever know
the things that we do when we're

oh - the night is endless as the sea
reach out and take a hold of me
we share a sadness you can breathe
it's in the way that we want

oh - i still sing to say your name
and while we'll never be again
i feel you coursing through my veins
and will until the day i

did you break your own heart?
did you scare yourself so badly?
did it cut right down to the bone?
to the place where only you can go
that's all that matters
that's all that matters

There Is No End to What We Need

there is no end to the things that we need
come closer now, come closer now
the animals sniffing out our fear
come closer now, come closer now
our place here doesn't matter much anymore
come closer now, come closer now
if only we had taken the time to breathe
come closer now, come closer now

in my pocket i have fifteen cents
sixteen, maybe
in this lifetime i will come to an end
in this world only

we should have turned back around years ago
come closer now, come closer now
the mouth of the beast lying patient in wait
come closer now, come closer now
the hallway crowded in disbelief
come closer now, come closer now
our arrogance is always the last to leave
come closer now, come closer now

one day we won't want

Our Bodies Will Float

isn't it time you danced
to whichever songs
make their way out to
the floor you're standing on
and if they move too fast
and all you want is slow
honey, close your eyes
make it just be so

because we're blessed
to have people who care for us
it's alright
to ask when everything goes black

back then we ran so fast
i could hardly breathe
and yet every time
you'd wait up for me

our bodies will float
yours next to mine
our bodies will float
'til the end of time

End of a Stay

just one week longer here in oregon, the summer she always longed for
escaping all her endless troubles, with a whole new family to falter
now only hours to departure, a party in her honor
before it's back to that texas town and doing daddy favors

and the sun it's done
shining on her face
and to know her was
to know you're too late

he coaxed her back to his apartment with the want of a cigarette
to sweetly smoke in the darkness as the clouds grew around their heads
he pushed her down as he held her mouth but she shouted out instead
and with a foot upon her throat, he took what he could get

came the cousins' first touch
sleeping bodies around
how nobody woke
to that awful sound

i just want you to know

Go Clear

there was a time when you
had the things you need
your eyes so wide and clear
and love came easily

not so
these days
but i know
they'll turn soon

the nights that glide right past
are the ones i long for most
her smell of saintly sweet
still sends me off to sleep

each night
i wake
full of dreams
i cannot shake

she spills the secrets we shared
turns and runs for sport
i buried that garden of weeds
cursing it every time

i crossed
over top
in time
it will come back

Christmas Prayer

come on christmas time,
you've put on long enough a show
shackles on your eyes,
you've watched enough come and go
wipe it from your mouth,
you've missed it just enough to know
step out on the flames,
you've gotten close enough to home

and when you can, you don't
and where you would, you won't
you should quit while you're ahead
you're anyone else's guess
but mine

come on say goodbye,
you've crawled enough out on the floor
is this what you want,
you've had it long enough, be sure
hollowed out the words,
you've spoke it well enough before
when the truth comes out,
you've felt it less enough than more

Good God

good god i'm not the man you want
it's not the first time you've been wrong
dash off to parties, banquet halls
in the end, we're no better off
that man who has nothing at all
he climbs without the fear of fall

there's no wrong that you could right

wake once from the summer of our sleep
so much for shaking winter's reach
in rivers rising from her feet
a cut above my razor teeth
we baptize sinners and the saints
as clergy air all their complaints

there's no wrong i can't forgive

i fell all the way back to home
door open, laying down my bones
shake once this feeling of alone
of all the things that have up and gone
back out into the night once more
this could be lovers final score

there's no wrong move we make tonight

Is It Getting Better?

it's not enough to capture
hung up on diamond rings and green
all the gold that glitters
you said it wouldn't mean a thing
but now your eyes are glowing
and your face is turning tricks
i should have known much sooner
that it all comes down to this

is it getting better all the time?

the raining of a signal
calling our attention now
we glance up to the skyline
only to find it's emptied out
when i wake up thinking
that it's passing like a cloud
the more the moment matters
the less i find myself around

so is it getting better all the time?

when everyone i love
is still alive

Life Is Forever For Everyone

so hard to hear the heart stopping
like the hands on a broken clock
so long before the cold comes calling
and the sun waits another watch
when you want to go

behind our maple shade in mourning
a pear tree sheds her skin
come audrey on our way from all this
useless, dying end
when you want to go

remember when i stood so tall
you were right there, you had seen it all
well now i've been shedding with each breath
get me back to size, get me right again

two bodies cross the ocean frozen
breathing air i once knew
a voice calls out into the silence
for you to push on through
when you want to go

life is forever for everyone

Some Say Others

absence only in your eyes
i inhabit such a daily need

it's getting better
or so they sell us
i almost believe them
because we need it
you found another
desperate mouth to feed
a pet to pity
we want the same thing

absence only in your eyes
i inhabit such a daily need

there's no place left
for you to stand on top
the clocks are dead wrong
the room is roped off
your haunted trophies
polished just right
a phony family
to cling to each night

some say others
some stay clean
some go elsewhere
some finding what they need
i can't speak for anybody
sundown turns golden
sunk deep into the sun
son said he's sorry
some things get lost between
i can't speak for anybody
but i heard that you could

I Know No Peak

these dead days
i want sleep without the dreams
up to my neck
in an avalanche of heat
cause now you're here
now you're everywhere

and when i said
i never
i must have meant
that i would try

on the eve
of my lone recovery
i know no peak
i can't climb without the fear
cause now you're here
now you're everywhere

crooked streets that lead to nowhere back
i never been so flush in all my life

No, We Won't

what will you carry from the collapse
there's no saving grace left inside
a couple nights, safe in your sheets
wake me when it's over and gone
hiding alone, hiding alone
long before the bombs have dropped
hiding alone, hiding alone
there's no where else for us to go

no, we won't

what laughing lingers at the end of the line
as we surface to explode
how did we wind up so swollen and still
our lovers dying in our arms
hiding alone, hiding alone
long before the bombs have dropped
hiding alone, hiding alone
there's no where else for us to go

no, we won't

this can be anything you want
the rivers pull the ground apart
the ocean speaking one last time
the sky is soaking upside down
this can be anything you want
the mountains crawl into the sea
the cities sink inside the sand
the planets giving way to night

so don't fall apart

In Bleeding Kansas (part 2)

how long can you
sit and wonder
what could have been
what would have been
there you lay
stuck in place
watching the escape
watching me escape

i'll be back one day
i'll come back one day
just you wait
just you wait
